August 14, 1947 — Placerville, CA
4:00 p.m. Insurance executive Ray A. Switzer and his wife are driving along Cedar Ravine Road about 5 miles south of Placerville, California, when they see a smoke trail. In front of it is a metallic, highly polished chromium object, 4–6 feet wide and 10-14 inches thick, rounded slightly on top and larger in the front, that leaves a white trail at 500–1,000 feet and traveling at high speed.
