December 11, 1955 — nr. Jacksonville, FL — Radar-Visual Intercept Attempt

December 11, 1955 — nr. Jacksonville, FL
9:00 p.m. Near Jacksonville, Florida, two airline pilots and ground observers see a fast-maneuvering, orange-red, round object, with ground radar tracking. Two USN jets on a practice night-flying mission are vectored to the object by a Naval Air Station Jacksonville controller. On approach the object suddenly rises up to 30,000 feet then dives back down in a circle, buzzing the jets. [Eberhart]
