January 17, 1969 — Crittenden, VA — Elliptical Object / Helo? / LAST BB UNKNOWN

January 17, 1969 — Crittenden, VA
3:24 a.m. A NASA employee is awakened in his home at Crittenden, Virginia, by a loud hum like an electrical transformer going bad. Looking out the window, he sees an elliptical object, about 30 feet wide, flying 100 feet above the ground. Around its base is a ring of rectangular amber-lighted windows, one of which is blinking in time to changes in the pitch of the hum. The object rocks gently as it moves and makes a slow turn to the west, fading from sight. Blue Book investigators try to convince him he has seen a helicopter, but there is no evidence of traffic that night. They label the sighting “unidentified,” the last report so designated in the blue Book files. [Eberhart]
