March 6, 1957 — Great Meadows, NJ — “huge derby hat”

March 6, 1957 — Great Meadows, NJ
2:00 p.m. Hearing the family dogs barking in the backyard, Mary Martin, who lives on Shades of Death Road near Great Meadows, New Jersey, looks outside and sees the dogs looking at a white object that looks like a “huge derby hat” about 50 feet in diameter. It is rocking slightly in the air as it hovers about 10–15 feet above a field behind her house and making a low, rumbling sound. Beneath it are “streamers or lines” that “twinkle like the fragile strands” of Christmas tinsel. She watches it for a full minute until the object abruptly rises almost vertically at an “immense rate of speed.” The dogs stop barking. [Eberhart]
