September 11 [12th?], 1947 — Necker Island
About 7:58 p.m. Capt. Stanley S. Griffin and 2d Officer Edward B. Polhemus are flying a Pan American airliner from Midway Atoll to Oahu, Hawaii. Just beyond Necker Island, they see an intense white light about 5 miles away off their starboard side. It approaches to about 1 mile away and the pilot switches to manual controls, whereupon the light suddenly veers away, splits into two parts, and turns reddish. The two lights appear to burn out about 30 miles ahead of them about 6 seconds later. [Eberhart] Date is confusing.
